Whitney Houston and Dana Bash

Whitney Elizabeth Houston was the youngest of the children of singer Dionne Warswick and gospel singer Cissy Houston. Whitney Elizabeth Houston grew up in a musical household. In Newark, Whitney began singing with the church choir in the early years of her childhood. When she was 15 years old, she joined her mother in the background vocals for Chaka's smash Im Every Woman from 1978. Her mother, Jermaine and Lou Rawls were among the artists she backed up. She was also briefly as a model for Seventeen magazine in the year 1981. Her work as the lead vocalist in New York funk group Material caught the eye of big record companies, like Arista and Arista, which she signed her contract in 1982, where she stayed the rest of her life. Her debut album Whitney Houston was released in 1985, and was the most-seller album of an artist who was a rookie. The album All My Love was released in 1985, and quickly became a number one single. The album sold 3 million copies during its initial year, as well as 25 million around the world. The album won her first six Grammys. The 1987 follow-up album Whitney that included hits Where Do Broken Hearts Go and I Wanna Dance With Somebody built upon her successes, but it was her 1992 movie The Bodyguard (1992) that made her one of the best-selling artists ever. Though the movie was not well-received and neither was her performance, the music of the film's Dolly Parton version I Will Always Love You was able to reach the top spot on both singles and albums charts across the US for a period of time. She sold 44,000,000 copies. It was also in 1993 that she was married to Bobby Brown, an ex-New Edition singer with whom she bore the sole child of her marriage, Bobbi Kristina Brown. In 1996 her daily consumption of the drug was well-documented.
